Expertise

Coastal and estuarine processes, numerical modeling, tidal Inlets, sediment transport, barrier islands, coastal resiliency

Personal Overview

Dr. Zarillo has more than 40 years of experience in coastal ocean processes, marine geology, and
sedimentology. Dr. Zarillo also has extensive experience the application of statistics and time-series
analysis to environmental studies and the application of remote sensing methods in coastal and terrestrial
environments. He has conducted applied and basic research on tidal inlet hydraulics, dynamics of barrier
island systems, sediment transport mechanics, and the hydrodynamics of coastal and estuarine
environments. Dr. Zarillo has applied 3D process and environmental models to coastal and estuarine
environments for more than 25 years. Dr. Zarillo’s current research is focused on adaptive management for
coastal resiliency and coastal ocean sea-level processes

Educational Background

Ph.D. University of Georgia

BS, MS  Univeristy of Rhode Island

Professional Experience

Dr. Zarillo has an educational background in marine geology, physical oceanography and applied statistics. His professional experience ranges from academic institutions to consulting and industry. He has completed applied and basic research in coastal processes, including prediction of sediment transport in shallow marine and estuarine environments, hydraulics of tidal inlets, dynamics of barrier islands and response of the coast to sea-level rise. He also has extensive experience in the application of statistics to geophysical problems. Current research focus is coastal resiliency.

Current Courses

Courses taught include geological oceanography, environmental geology, coastal processes modeling and remote sensing.
